A Tax-Smart Way to Give Back to UCLA Sigma Chi

Dear UCLA Sigma Brothers,

As a fellow Bruin and proud Sigma Chi, I wanted to share a unique opportunity to contribute to the legacy that has shaped so many of us. When I reflect on my years at 459 Gayley, I’m reminded of the lifelong friendships, invaluable experiences, and countless memories that have enriched my life. Now, we have a chance to give back by supporting the Bruin Sig Foundation’s project to revitalize our beloved House.

The problem I faced, like many of you, was figuring out the best way to make this happen. As a recent retiree, planning for my family’s future is top of mind. Having saved through IRAs over the years, I worried that a direct gift would trigger taxes, making it harder to contribute in the way I wanted

But here’s where things get exciting: over 70% of the building project is dedicated to educational spaces—think study rooms, meeting areas, and places where future generations of Sigma Chis will grow. This educational focus allows funding through a charitable organization, and since the Bruin Sig Foundation is IRS-recognized, you can make a qualified charitable contribution directly from your IRA without it being considered taxable income.

This unique type of gift means:

– You can contribute directly from your traditional IRA, avoiding taxable income.

– It’s available for those over 70½, making it a tax-efficient way to give.

– While there’s no deduction on the tax return for this specific type of gift, many of us take the standard deduction anyway.

With the contribution limit of $100,000 annually (or $200,000 for joint filers), there’s potential to make a substantial impact.

This House, which has served as a second home to us all, is still standing after 50 years, but it needs our support. The time to help is now, and every contribution brings us one step closer to creating a space where future Sigma Chis can thrive.

Join me in supporting this project and ensuring our legacy endures for generations to come. Together, we can make a difference.

In Hoc,
